How do you start an important conversation without attacking or withdrawing?
The difficulty of a conversation can begin before the first sentence. When you try to explain everything at once or control the other person's reaction in advance, the conversation can become even harder. A clearer beginning starts with your intention, one topic and room for both people to speak.
The opening sentence will be prepared in Conversation. You can edit it before sending.
Example questions
What do you want the conversation to achieve?
Before you begin, separate whether you want to communicate something, hear the other person, set a boundary or find an agreement together. One clear intention helps prevent the conversation from becoming a collection of old issues.
What could the first sentence sound like?
You can begin: "It's important to me that we talk about one thing. I don't want to attack you. I want to explain how I experience it and hear your side too." Then stay with one concrete situation.
What can't you control?
You can choose your tone, timing and boundary, but you cannot determine the other person's reaction in advance. A useful criterion is that your message remains clear and fair even if the response is not immediately what you hoped for.
